Advancing Environmental Economics Across the Mediterranean
MEDAERE, the Mediterranean Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, aims to unite researchers working in the field of environmental and natural resource economics in the Mediterranean. It builds on the strong regional cooperation within EAERE and expands this to recognise our shared Mediterranean values. In doing so, it joins the worldwide tradition of other regional associations of environmental economists, namely the American (AERE), African (AFAERE), Asian (AAERE), and Latin American (LAERE) Associations of Environmental and Resource Economists.
Members of all national environmental and resource economics associations across the Mediterranean have the opportunity to automatically become members. MEDAERE is a no-flag association: members represent the Mediterranean and regional cooperation, not their individual countries of origin.
The main objectives and activities of he association are:
- Building a network of environmental and resource economists and scientists working on the Mediterranean region;
- Conducting trainings, research collaborations, and knowledge exchange among early stage researchers;
- Driving progress on regional sustainable development and environmental issues;
- Developing proposals and policy solutions to face common environmental challenges in the Mediterranean.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, renewable energy, the transition from fossil fuels, waste management, pollution, climate-related migration, natural resource conflicts and cooperation, natural disasters, and infrastructure cooperation.
MEDAERE was established in Siena in September 2024. It is currently hosted at and coordinated by the University of Siena, which functions as Scientific Secretariat.
Working Group
The MEDAERE working group is composed of colleagues from all the shores of the Mediterranean who contributed to launch the Association and co-design its aims and activities. They drafted together and officially signed the MEDAERE statute that embodies the common vision and shared values of the Association. The Working Group members are:
